Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment:

The Assessment Group offers diagnostic assessments of autism for children and adults. A diagnosis can help explain certain experiences or challenges. It can also help assist in accessing services and supports such as accommodations in schools or workplaces. Understanding neurodiversity can empower individuals in self-acceptance and navigating social situations in ways that are best for the individual with that diagnosis.  

An assessment for autism includes an interview to discuss developmental, social, and educational history, medical history, and current concerns. Standardized assessments include observation and questionnaires for social communication skills, sensory sensitivities, and other areas. Assessment tools vary depending on the individual's age. Feedback and diagnosis are provided based on the assessment findings. Finally, recommendations for support for challenges will be provided. 

F.A.Q - ASD Assessment

Children (6 years and older) and adolescents: ASD assessments must be completed in person. Available to Ontario residents only.

Adults: ASD Adult Autism Assessment (Ontario) are conducted entirely online.

  • A brief phone appointment with the intake coordinator can help clarify your goals and explore available service options.

  • The ASD assessment is carried out by a licensed psychologist and includes an intake session, clinical interviews, online or in-person testing, a feedback session, and a comprehensive report. Previous psychological, academic, and medical assessment reports, along with other pertinent information, will be reviewed.

  • The psychologist may be able to provide a letter supporting workplace or school accommodations, depending on the results of the diagnostic assessment. The final decision regarding any accommodation rests with the school or employer.

  • An ASD assessment is typically covered through an employer-sponsored or private insurance plan. Please check with your insurance provider to confirm the specific coverage details and any requirements.

  • No, you do not need a doctor’s referral.

  • The supports available may vary depending on the type of assessment being completed. Each assessment will provide tailored recommendations to address any identified issues in your region, with support services such as psychotherapy and coaching available.
