Psychotherapy, in particular Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be beneficial for a wide range of mental health challenges. It focuses on understanding how thoughts, feelings and actions are interconnected. By learning ways to modify actions and thoughts, it’s often possible to decrease distress and improve day- to-day functioning. This therapy is a collaborative approach between the client and the therapist. This is often the go to therapy for individuals seeking help with chronic stress, anxiety (includes many types of anxiety like OCD, panic, social anxiety), depression and PTSD.
-
CBT and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) both emphasize the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, however, the specific techniques used in either therapy differ somewhat. DBT has an added focus on emotion regulation, mindfulness and building interpersonal effectiveness. DBT is a very skills based therapy that is often more structured that CBT. DBT tends to work well for individuals seeking help with managing big emotions or who have a suspected personality disorder. Participating in CBT or DBT has minimal risk. It’s possible you may feel difficult emotions at times, however, this is temporary. Your therapist will work with you to determine the type of therapy that would work best.
